Weekly Wrap-up 2005_45

We had rain last week. There was a good hard evening rain on Monday night — nice to listen to while reading. We also had a terrific thunderstorm a little later in the week! Rich and I are fond of thunderstorms.

I was having trouble focusing on my computer screens. I don't have trouble driving, reading, or doing anything else… and an eye exam plus new glasses would be very expensive. I've adjusted my desk, keyboard, and screens so I'm a bit further away. The physical change is good enough for now.

We took the Scion in for its third complimentary oil change. Its yellow "Maint Req." light had also come on (some 13,000 mile thing) and it needed the tires rotated. Such a good car. No problems. I just love it.

Rich cooked another roast this week. We turned the leftovers into beef veggie soup.

While he was at the store, Rich bought some "Chinese Apple Pears". They were tasty but my taste buds were confused. Crisp like apple. Slightly perfumey. Tasted a little like pear but not… quite. Good, though.

I gave away seven pairs of lightly worn womens' shoes, purchased many years ago when I dressed differently for work (and had a well-paying job). I haven't worn them in years. I used the Freecycle Network to find them appreciative new homes.

We turned on Dice (job search site) for Rich, posting his resume. The good thing about Dice is that people see your resume. The bad thing is that this can lead to a lot of telephone calls (i.e. unexpected interruptions and distractions).

Note: if you're a recruiter reading this, please send email first!

I applied for a bunch of jobs in SF and on the Peninsula. I've decided that I am willing to apply to positions in Sunnyvale iff the job is reachable by CalTrain. Otherwise, I've stopped searching the San Jose area. I realized that I cannot take the commute stress anymore.

We drove up to the North Bay on Sunday for dinner at a favorite BBQ restaurant we discovered years ago on a trip to Eureka. We had dinner with a man who may have a possible contract for Rich. Whether or not a contract comes of it, we had an interesting conversation.

It was foggy on Hwy 35 through Daly City but cleared as we got into SF and onto the Great Highway. The ocean was pretty. The sky was blue. Lots of people were flying kites. The drive through the Presidio was nice and the views were splendid.

We had one slowdown; there had been an accident on the bridge about 10 minutes ahead of us. The emergency vehicles were arriving as we got onto the bridge. They stopped the southbound traffic for the emergency vehicles to go north in those lanes. It took us an extra half hour to cross the bridge. I was glad we were near the front.

I was also glad that the weather was so clear and pretty.
We were in the right-most lane. We just sat on the bridge and watched tourists and sailboats and moved forward a few feet at a time.

The weather remained gorgeous all the way up to Petaluma, with cows dotting the hills and peppermint-striped clouds as the sun set. We were about 20 minutes early for dinner even with the slowdown on the bridge.

We had a nice long dinner, bought an order of ribs to go, and had no traffic at all on the drive home.

This week I read Blink, by Malcolm Gladwell. It's a non-fiction discussion of first impressions. I recommend it.

I also read The Ghost and the Dead Deb, a "bookstore mystery" by Alice Kimberley,
and four mysteries in a series by Jaqueline Girdner:
Death Hits the Fan
Murder on the Astral Plane, Murder My Deer, and A Sensitive Kind of Murder. These are predictable but kind of fun.

In between and around the rest, I've had almost enough naps and plenty of snuggles with the cats. There have been good meals and interesting conversations with Spouse and friends. I've had a few chats with my Dad (who had some computer problems). I've applied for about a dozen jobs; no interviews looming.

Onward and Upward.
