I worked from home on Tuesday. I got a lot done. I put in nine and a half hours without noticing. I didn't feel the need to "get up, get out, and get away". It was quiet. There were no distractions.
I got work done. I was productive. I felt relaxed. It was wonderful.
I had planned to work from home again today. I had hoped to make working from home a regular part of my schedule.
Unfortunately, there was a sinkhole in my road to productive off site work and I walked right into it. I made a fatal political error. I announced my intentions.
Bad move.
You should understand, I (thought I had) cleared this with my manager nearly a month ago. I was never advised to keep the plan secret. But as soon as I told people, apparently some (unspecified) number of my co-workers cried "Me too! Why not me too?".
Well, I say, more power to them. Why not them too? Why not less hassle, more productivity, increased comfort levels, more actual work being done? Why not fewer cars on the road, less smog in the air?
Duh.
What Could I have been THINKing! This is Corporate America. We don't want productivity; we want Bodies In Chairs. What would our managers do if there's no one to "manage"?
