This was a short week with a long weekend. That's the best kind!
I put my Job home directory into my iPod so I can carry it between the Job and home without having to carry the laptop. I plug the iPod in at the Company, work, then log out, unmount and eject the iPod, bring it home, plug it into my personal laptop at home, log in, and continue to work.
Dumbo mis-set the microwave on Tuesday and converted her lunch into charcoal briquets (i.e. I ran the convection microwave for 20 minutes on High instead of low-mix bake and turned two ham & cheese croissant into char and tar). I also filled the living room and kitchen area with smoke down to about 18" off the floor. Luckily, only one cat was in that part of the house and he was below the smoke; I wasn't. I coughed, I hacked. I took Bebop downstairs, then opened all the windows, turned on the ceiling fans and the porch fan, opened the front door, got two more portable fans, coughed, wheezed, closed off the bedroom wing, took Squirrel and Raven downstairs, coughed, apologized to Bebop who gave me a look. I could still taste smoke for the rest of the day. I left the fans running till Rich got home. The house smelled bad for the rest of the week. 😦
We did a Pizza.pm get together on Tuesday night (that's what we call our occasional pizza "meetings" with the SF Perl Users Group. Only two other Perl people came but we ate good pizza. One of our friends who came is vegetarian so we had a pizza that was half pesto, feta, garlic, and artichoke hearts and half "house special" (slaami, sausage, pepperoni, and mushroom). I split the veggie side. It was delicious.
We stopped by Just Deserts after dinner and bought a vanilla steamed milk and two slices of carrot cake to go. Their carrot cake is incredible. There's a nut or two in every forkful.
Speaking of incredible, no we haven't seen The Incredibles yet. We intend to. We just… haven't managed to work it into our plans yet. We will. Honest.
This was my 4th Junior Achievement week. There's one more. I made a lot of changes to this activity. I've been finding (ever since the Disaster of the Donut Shop in the 2nd week) that the activities work much better if I don't follow them as written.
Rich helped me print the "Certificates of Achievement" to give to the students next week after the last JA activity. I set up the name of the student, the school and the date using Apple Works (Draw), then Rich ran them through the printer one at a time on manual feed, while I changed the student's name for each one.
My co-worker brought cinnamon bread again on Wednesday. The bakery is two blocks from his house and he went in to buy rolls for Thanksgiving. Oooh, is he ever accumulating good karma points. That stuff is heavenly. Twice when I heard someone out on the breakroom talking about it, I went out and told them who brought it.
Thursday was Turkey Day. Our favorite diner was open for breakfast so we shared an omelette. For dinner we went to Chicken! Chicken! – unfortunately, the experience was not all we had hoped for. Apparently they ran out of dark meat well before we got there at 5:30. Rich, disappointed, ordered the half chicken instead. I accepted white turkey. I got two slices. Sheesh. Two measly slices. This for the same price as the half chicken. The potatoes and stuffing were good but… we were underwhelmed.
Friday we had a nice lunch at Todai Asian Seafood buffet. We prefer to go on a weekday because the price is lower but we don't have many opportunities. Actually, I prefer weekend lunch if possible because then the price isn't much higher but they have unagi nigiri (barbecued eel; "unagi" sounds better 🙂
Saturday was the start of my second weekend. Four day weekends are WONderful! I spent Saturday doing nothing productive. 🙂 We had brunch. Then I read, took a nap with the cats, got up, had dinner, read some more, and went to bed.
Sunday was very much in the same spirit as Saturday for most of the day.
On Sunday night, as we were reading, I commented on a "mooing" noise outside. Rich thought it was the Scion but on careful inspection (and after moving the car several times) it turned out to be something in the garage or above the garage. Unfortunately, while we now have the location pinpointed to within 10 feet we're still unsure of either the cause or a solution. ;-(
Rich spent the rest of Sunday night reading in the bedroom. The location of the noise is, unfortunately, directly below under his favorite reading spot in the living room.
Speaking of reading, I finished Magician's Guild as well as The Novice by Trudi Canavan. I haven't started the third book in the trilogy yet. I also read Exile's Valor by Mercedes Lackey (good) and The Cat Next Door by Marion Babson (not one of her best, I'm afraid; the story has too many unnecessary bits and and the cat is barely part of the story at all).
In between and around the rest, I've had a few naps, several good meals, and interesting conversations with various and sundry. I've chatted with my dad, posted two weblog entries, and snuggled with the cats. And I had a 4-day weekend. Yumm.
