My First Cross-stitch Project

A long time ago…

In my first semester of grad school, I went to a Greek (food & music) Festival where I discovered two things:

1) Gyros (yum!) -from a food tent!

and

2) counted cross stitch – from a woman sitting on the lawn stitching

I had been doing needlepoint and crewel embroidery since I was 10 (?) years old. Cross stitch combined the best of both for me and I've mostly done Cross stitch ever since.

A month or so later, I purchased a kit to make a wedding gift for my best friend from college. The kit was meant to be crewel embroidery, but being a creative sort when it comes to handcrafts (thanks, Mom!), I decided to convert it to cross stitch. I replaced the crewel yarn with floss in the same colors. Not knowing any "better" I stitched over 1 on the included linen fabric (a weird choice because linen is "even count" only if you stitch "over two". So, my crosses were more rectangular than square, but OK.

The result was lovely. (I _know_ I took photos, but I can't find them. They're probably somewhere in a storage locker in Pennsylvania.) In any case, it was a gift and I don't have it anymore.

Which brings us to. today.. guess what I recently found on eBay? That was delivered today?!

I can stitch it again; this time for me! (and probably over two on the linen.)
