This house is on septic. When we bought it, the septic tank was umarked, although we had a rough idea where it was buried.
I said "Let's take out that awful grass and plant petunias. That way, in a few years, when they need to pump the tank, we haven't planted anything permanent, they can dig it up, and then put in risers."
(We should have noticed the Universal Laugh Track in the background).
So, … Rich has an electric rototiller. That does make breaking up the soil easier. When it caught on "something", we dug more carefully and found… a piece of bent rebar? Heavy wire? Cement… the septic tank lid?
Digging further, we found more pieces of wire, more concrete. Yep, that's the tank. It's only buried 10" down.
So, we called the Septic company to make an appointment to have risers put in now. They gave us a discount if we did all of the uncovering ourselves. (They told us ours was the cleanest uncovering job they'd seen.)
The tech came out and installed the risers. We covered everything up with dirt again. I planted my petunias.
And now we have a pretty flowerbed that is unlikely to need to be completely dug up anytime in the foreseeable future.
