Information Bubbles

So… this evening Rich was talking about Information Bubbles – that idea that we tend to self-curate the people and information around us to be in favor of our own beliefs and opinions.

You say that like it's a bad thing.

I posited that
a) people have been doing this for millennia ("tribes").
b) we've been doing it ourselves for years (e.g. we're techies. We associate primarily with techies. I can name one somewhat techno-phobic friend whom we've associated with a lot, socially, and even she is married to an engineer.)
c) since mid-2016, hardening the bubble has been more about self-care than anything else. There are people in that other "bubble" over there who are Dangerous.

There are certainly plenty of articles on living in an information bubble and "missing" things that are said or written outside of that bubble but… is that true? Really?

From inside my bubble, I can thank Rachel Maddow, Trevor Noah, Stephen Colbert, The Guardian, and scores of people and news sites who watch what's going on in the Bubbles Where I Fear To Tread and bring back news of what "the others" are talking about and doing.

My guess is that the people in "my" bubble are more aware of what's going on outside it than the people in some of the other bubbles might be. Example: no matter how much I prefer to close my eyes, stick my fingers in my ears and HUM very loudly, I still hear about what people in the Fox News bubble are doing and talking about. Do those people know as much about what's going on over here? Or is the humming too loud at Fox News?
