Many many moons ago, I started calling my test programs “bagel”… I did this after a memorable occasion when I had used the Bourne shell ‘test’ command in a script that a co-worker ran from her test script which she named… “test”. Can you say “recursion“? Oy! The two of us made a deal after that; I would use the command alias “[” and she would name all of her test scripts “bagel”. In the years that have followed, I too have named my test scripts “bagel”.
Eventually I started making test directories named Bagels (or Bagelry). These days I often name my test programs by various types of bagel, e.g. sesame.pl, poppy.pl, onion.pl…
Thus you may understand the sense of bemusement I get from my current project, in which I am working on a parser that has been named (by its creator and former owner) — parsnip.pl.
I’ve never seen a parsnip bagel. I never hope to see one…
