I recently shared this image with friends on Facebook. The image comes via Beth Beulow’s Team Introvert Pinterest board.
One friend commented, “Wouldn’t ‘Team Introvert’ be an oxymoron?”
I thought about that for a moment or two and concluded that it’s not an oxymoron at all. The problem is more in the way a lot of people think of the word “team”.
I replied:
We’re a very loosely connected team. 🙂
If you consider this definition:
- a number of persons forming one of the sides in a game or contest
and the “game” is Life, then some of us are on Team Introvert and others are on Team Extravert!
When I was in College, I was a member of the Archery Team. Archery is a quintessential introvert sport. The archer is alone among many on the field. When all is as it should be, she is one with the bow, the arrow, and the target. No one else matters.
While individual scores may be added together to produce a “team score” in tournament competition, it is those individual scores that matter. When I take aim, I don’t watch what others are doing. Their position, their stance, when they loose… none of that matters to me.
An archery team is a team of separate individuals, working separately toward the same goal. We practice together, we work together, and we shoot together — individually.
There are similar sports: riflery, fencing, ice skating, skiing, and bowling qualify.
There’s no “i” in Team, but there is “m e”.
Yeay Team Introvert! “Rah” “Go team”
